History of the castle of Křivoklát


 

Křivoklát is one of the oldest and most important castles of Czech princes and kings.

 

Its origins date back to the 12th century.

During the reign of Premysl Otakar II., a large, monumental royal castle was substantially rebuilt by Wenceslas IV. and later whole heartedly finished by Vladislav Jagiello.

Křivoklát was seriously damaged by fire several times. He became a feared prison and its importance rapidly declined. Romantic 19th century and especially the owners of the castle Furstenberg, who held the castle until 1929, the castle was reconstructed and saved.

The beautiful castle chapel, the Royal and Knight Hall with an exhibition of Gothic paintings and sculptures, the Library containing over 52,000 volumes, the rich Furstenberg museum and gallery, the notorious prison and torture chambers complete with torture instruments, a monumental great tower with hunting collections and views of the surroundings, pleasant walk the ramparts, Huderka tower with a black kitchen nad lookout gallery, all this and much more is Křivoklát, a national cultural monument.
